Kuopio University Hospital Epilepsy Center
The Epilepsy Center multidisciplinary team offers diagnostics and care of epilepsy for adults and children. Our special expertise includes diagnostics and treatment of severe epilepsy, intracranial EEG-recordings and epilepsy surgery.
Our Epilepsy Center is responsible for the national coordination of diagnostics and care of severe epilepsies in Finland and is a member of the European Reference Network for Rare and Complex Epilepsies EpiCARE ERN.
The quality of the Epilepsy Centre is guaranteed by high-level scientific research, active training and development work. The center's activities include, among others,
- accurate epilepsy diagnosis
- determination of the seizure type and epilepsy syndrome
- identification of the cause of epilepsy, including genetics
- diagnostics of unclear episodic symptoms
- assessment of medication according to the specific epilepsy diagnosis
- planning of care during pregnancy
- work and driving ability assessments
- planning of vocational rehabilitation
- diagnostics and care of severe epilepsy
- assessment and treatment of surgical and neuromodulation options
- assessment and treatment of dietary care options
- clinical trials with new drugs and devices
- epilepsy-related initial information days and lectures
You need a doctor's referral to receive treatment at the KUH Epilepsy Center. In Finland the doctor will write you a referral to us in a health center, another hospital, occupational health care or private practice.
You have the opportunity to decide on your own health care provider together with the doctor who writes the referral. KUH Epilepsy Center treats patients from all over Finland and also from abroad. This means that you can choose KUH non-emergency care services regardless of your municipality of residence.
We also provide remote consultations to doctors together with other Finnish specialists and the EpiCARE ERN network.
